William H. “Bill” Doelle

Board Treasurer

Bill grew up in Michigan. He has a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona. Bill has always worked in the private sector. After a three-year stint in Santa Barbara, California, he returned to Tucson to found an Arizona division of a California nonprofit in 1982. In 1989, he established a for-profit firm, Desert Archaeology, Inc. and a nonprofit firm that today is Archaeology Southwest. Over the years both grew, often working collaboratively.

As the leader of both organizations until relatively recently, Bill had the opportunity to participate in a diverse array of research, educational, and preservation projects in Arizona and New Mexico. His heart has always been in the history and the peoples of the southern Southwest, which he describes as the Greater Gila River Watershed.

Bill first visited Camp Naco in the early 2000s and helped found the Naco Heritage Alliance. Those early years were focused on keeping the roofs on the Camp’s buildings intact and their walls standing. He feels it is a joy and an honor to be involved with this new Board and to help bring Camp Naco back to life.

Bill retired from Archaeology Southwest in early 2024, but he continues to serve as President Emeritus and Senior Advisor. In addition to the Naco Heritage Alliance Board, he is co-chair of the Board of the Arizona Deserts National Park Partnership, and he serves on the Science Committee of the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance.
