Margaret Hangan

Margaret Hangan is a Large Project Archaeologist with the Tonto National Forest, soon to be retired. She earned her BA in Anthropology from Pitzer College in 1989 and completed her MA thesis at California State University, Bakersfield in 2003. Margaret worked as a seasonal Archaeologist for 10 years before becoming a graduate student intern with the Bureau of Land Management in 1998. She transferred to the Forest Service in 2003 as the Forest Archaeologist and Tribal Liaison at the Cleveland National Forest in San Diego, CA. From 2007 to 2021, Margaret served as the Forest Archaeologist on the Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona before taking her current position. Margaret is the Chair of the Historic Preservation Commission for Williams, Arizona, serves on the Arizona State's Historic Sites Review Committee and the Coconino County African Diaspora Advisory Council. Her research interests include the African American History of the West with an emphasis on Arizona and the Arizona Historic Sheep Industry.
