Buffalo Soldiers in Bonita Canyon: Who They Were and Who They Mourned - President James A. Garfield by Sharon A. Kennedy

In 1885, the all-Black troops of the 10th Cavalry of the United States Army arrived in the Arizona Territory to assist in the final efforts to return Apache leader, Geronimo, to the San Carlos Reservation. While two troops were temporarily stationed in the Chiricahua Mountains to prohibit Geronimo's access to the waterholes, they built a large stone monument dedicated to slain President James Abram Garfield, who had died four years earlier. This is the story of those soldiers and that monument.
