Come celebrate the legacy and stories of black cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers on the American frontier! Learn about trailblazers who helped to settle and shape the American West, hear stories of sacrifice and perseverance, discuss the shared experiences of black Americans, and come together to unify for the future.
The program will feature presentations on the endurance of the black spirit throughout America’s troubled past, convey the lesser-known stories of black Americans who traveled west and pushed the boundaries of their own frontiers, a discussion on the residual effects of slavery and Jim Crow, and a joint Q&A on unifying to transform the future. It will also feature an art exhibition from the SWABS collection and a pocket booklet produced by the Camp Naco Project.
From the program: “As settlements grew into cities, Jim Crow segregation laws confronted black settlers. But on those lonely, dangerous, and beautiful lands we call the frontier, black pioneers built new lives. Born into slavery, African Americans had the same dreams of freedom and independence as did all other Americans. Given the chance, they proved time and again that they possessed skills, initiative, and courage.”
“In Your Pocket: Heroes of the Past” is a joint program of the City of Sierra Vista, Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers, and Camp Naco Project. It seeks to expand on the narratives of black Americans and celebrate their thriving communities and enduring commitment to freedom.
Camp Naco is located at 2118 W. Newell St. Naco, AZ 85620
